Touch screens and gesture-based interaction are the next GUI for mobile devices, but the trick is in getting them right.
About six weeks ago I wrote a column discussing how Windows Mobile smartphones with new UIs grafted on top of them didn’t always gel as a cohesive experience—mainly due to performance issues. The latest ones sport not just touch screens, but also other gestures such as rotating screens and haptic feedback. It’s all part of what is coming to be called natural user interfaces (NUIs)—when they work, that is.
