Argues that the fold is no longer relevant for up and coming Internet users. They argue that blogs, community driven sites and such are influencing the behavior where users scan the entire page for leads to explore. While it is true that in conventional eye tracking studies that user’s follow a “F” pattern in scanning pages, it does not mean that it will ensure retention or “stickiness.” A lot of that is evident from observing how the western culture has adopted the top left to bottom right method of reading documents (like books which are linear), whereas the undirected nature of the web and it’s robust relationships between associative content drives the interaction with how people wayfind throughout a space (not like books, unless designed to be one). In any case, the final word is that the bottom is the new frontier where there are no ads, more user comments and a site map. Go figure. Also, you can download the podcast and listen to it while on the bus. =)

This is similar to some of the wackier concepts we’ve had recently, this company is doing it for real. Browse through lists by tilting the phone, and more… Oh, and it’s really ugly.

A visual tour of the Android UI courtesy of Engadget. Not too fancy, but simple and nice. Its very open source and web 2.0 in style. What’s that? Primary navigation as horizontal scrolling tabs along the bottom? Hmmm…..

Users can slip on a virtual reality mask, grab a stylus and tracking device, and go to town. The system uses “drawing guidelines, force feedback, and two-handed interaction” to assist artists in drawing more precisely, and once movements are made, the patterns are transferred to a computer for use in 3D modeling and design programs. http://www.physorg.com/news109425896.htmlvia engadget

Jim Gasperini is experimenting with simple GIF and Flash animations that display a 3D image on a standard display. It sounds like the frame rate needs to be about 10 fps to work so you end up with a weird strobing effect. Still, it is quite interesting and I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work with video as well.

Some article I ran into that I thought were interesting. The first is a neat, albeit simple, visualization of stated deliverables and their respective groundwork for a designer.5 Competencies of UX DesignThis article speaks to the evolution of Information Design into the paradigm of User Experience. He argues that user experience is more than just making a product/service/good better. Instead, it is a matter of composing an experience that is the key differentiator to these higher experiences. What’s more interesting is this quote about the success of User Experience in practice thus far:
What’s remarkable is that the success rate of designed user experiences, even those informed by ethnography, is anecdotally reported to be a sparse five to ten percent. It might even be less. The vast majority of products and services designed according to the tenets of user experience, supported by ethnographic findings, do not achieve their goals.
My feeling is we should aim to be above the five percent. This should be an internal maxim.

It’s wild how natural the movement is of the amazing robotic ray, which recently came up in a meeting at Artefact. Also, check out the video for the Aqua Ray to see the size of the robot next to a diver. Very cool stuff.

It’s too bad they don’t explain a little more about how this works because it simply looks like a projection. It’s a pretty cool concept though.
